Hon. Njai, Member of Parliament for Banjul Central, joined his colleagues at the closing ceremony of the City Link Ostend-Banjul Project for training 30 women in sustainable ventures.

The City Link Ostend-Banjul Project has successfully concluded its training program for thirty women, focusing on soap making, recycling used tyres into stylish furniture, and developing business skills. This program took place at the Crab Island Sustainable Development Center in Banjul.
This initiative is a key component of the Women Empowerment Program at the Crab Island Sustainable Development Center, funded by the European Union under the Banjul City Council.
Observing young women being trained in these fields is promising. Now, they can utilise their newly acquired skills to earn a living, thereby creating opportunities for others to also become productive members of society.
The innovative reuse of outworn tyres is particularly commendable. This approach reduces indiscriminate disposal and prevents burning, which is a significant source of toxic air pollution and carbon emissions. By reutilising these tyres, we are enhancing air quality and promoting sustainable waste management. The stylish tire chairs and stools should be marketed to attract the relevant audience.
Moreover, developing public spaces with these furniture pieces in strategic city areas or parks can make the environment more inviting while simultaneously showcasing the creators’ talents. As the Crab Island Sustainable Center works on establishing a showroom for these products, we eagerly anticipate increased visibility and visitor attraction.
The variety of soaps produced deserves special mention. The three types presented include Neem soap, Moringa soap, and regular washing soap. Research highlights that Neem soap has anti-aging properties, containing antioxidants and vitamins that reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. It also protects the skin from environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution while clearing up acne breakouts.
Moringa soap is rich in vitamins and antioxidants (such as Vitamin C, E, and carotenoids), which prevent skin from drying out and assist with anti-aging. By removing excess skin oil, it maintains skin flexibility and moisture, keeping fine lines and wrinkles at bay.
Let’s collectively support the promotion of these soaps, aiming to make them the dominant choice in the market. This will foster a thriving business environment for these skilled city residents in both areas.
I extend my gratitude to the Future Proof Banjul for creating this opportunity through the Banjul City Council BCC
