Office of NAM Banjul Central constituency under the leadership of Hon. Abdoulie Njai hereby expresses concern over the Government of The Gambia’s decision to seize control of McCarthy
Square, a historic public space at the heart of Banjul (Banjul central). The square has for
generations been a cornerstone of civic life but in recent years bureaucratic barriers from
government have kept us from exploring its full potential. The Local Government Act clearly
outlines the authority of local councils to manage municipal properties and public assets.
This unilateral takeover seeks to erase our ownership entirely further alienating Banjulians from a cherished communal asset that rightfully belongs to them.

If negotiations prove futile, we welcome the Council’s decision to pursue legal action against the move, as it is a critical defence of our local autonomy. I urge every citizen to join us in peaceful resistance, to reject this decision, and to reclaim McCarthy Square through unity, advocacy, and
unwavering resolve. Together, we will ensure this symbol of our shared identity remains in the hands of the people.
